While reading Marie Claire I was awe struck by a gold, studded Valentino minaudière. Glamorous, edgy and cute all wrapped into one accessory is hard to achieve. French for a small decorative case for carrying small articles such as cosmetics or jewelry, one can assume the original sizing of minaudière didn’t factor in for an iphone. Luckily my DIY verison will fit all of the essentials a gal needs. See how to make this gem for yourself below!
WHAT YOU NEED:
- 2.5 yards gold pyramid trim
- Wood box with clasp
- Gold spray paint
- Clear spray paint
- E6000 glue
- Q-tips or toothpicks
1. Spray paint the inside with two layers of gold spray paint. Let the coats dry and then spray a clear coat to seal the paint. This might dull the metallic sparkle of the gold, but it will really smooth out the roughness of the wood. Krylon Triple Thick Clear Glaze paint and Design Master 24K Gold paint are the bomb. For the outside, just spray two layers of gold paint.
2. Next measure and cut pieces of the pyramid stud trim to fit the box. This part is a little tricky so it is easiest to start with the large square surface by measuring, cutting and gluing each piece as you go along. For the sides, keep the box slightly open so the glue doesn’t seal the box shut.
E6000 is really stringy, thick glue and works best for this DIY if an ample amount is applied. Q-tips are great because they act as little brushes to help spread out the glue. Let the glue dry for about 15- 30 sec to let it get tacky before applying the trim. If you notice some of spots where the trim didn’t adhere, just add a bit more glue and hold the trim down to secure it. For the side with the hinges, I used two pieces one on each side of the box covering the hinges and kept the box slightly open to make sure I didn’t glue the box shut.
