My mother taught me how to sew when I was 8 years old. I picked it up quickly and learned mostly through trial and error. In 8th grade, I took home ec and improved my skills by making stuffed animals. Cool, I know. When I was in college, I started using patterns to make clothing for my self as well as sewing other easy things – pillows, duvet covers, etc. Once I entered the real world, I made more clothes for myself as well as hair accessories and special projects for friends. With each project, my skills have improved and my products are more professional. Now I am focused on mastering technical sewing skills, learning fit for my body, and understanding clothing construction.
With today’s fast fashion, sewing doesn’t provide the benefits like it did back in the day. It was much cheaper to sew your own clothes and you were able to make garments that you couldn’t get in your city. So why do I sew? I thrive on the challenge of constructing a garment and making something tangible that I imagined. I need to be creative and make things with my hands. I love putting a personal twist on things so it’s unique to me. I also look for inspiration in high end fashion – Chanel, YSL, Balmain – that is way out of my budget. Sewing allows me to pull inspiration from the runway and bring it to life in my own closet.
Why create sewing tutorials? I love teaching and sharing my experience, skills and knowledge to help others. Not everyone has a family member to teach them or have time/money to attend classes in their city. I want to be an online resource to help you sew. Additionally, I want to challenge myself by checking my sewing knowledge. Check yo’ self before you wreck yo’ self.
What can you expect in the sewing tutorials? Fun, clear, and manageable lessons that will teach you how to sew. I utilized my professional research skills to develop the tutorials in this series. I delve into not only the hows, but also the whys of sewing.
I bring a fresh, edgy approach to sewing. This ain’t your grandma’s sewing. Join me on this awesome journey where we learn how to be bada$$ sewers!
